Wondering what supplements you should take when TTC? Find out exactly why Omega-3 supplements are so beneficial!
The medical research
–Taking Omega-3 supplements has been shown in the research to be especially helpful when treating male infertility factors. Omega-3s can be helpful for women too, although some studies are inconclusive. Check out the research:
–For men: A study by Hosseini found that omega-3 treatments “significantly increased” sperm motility. It seems to be widely accepted that both Omega-3 supplements and CoQ10 are helpful in treating male-factor infertility.
–For women: A study by Chiu found that among women going through assisted reproduction, the chance of pregnancy and live birth both increased by 8% for every 1% increase in omega-3 polyunsaturated fat levels.
–Other various studies have found it to be helpful for various things — such as increased progesterone levels, decreased anovulatory cycles, and overall higher pregnancy rates (see Lass). The study does point out, however, that other studies have been somewhat inconclusive on the value of Omega-3s for women (can’t hurt though!).
My experience
–I take 1200 mg daily, as this was recommended by my doctor.
–*Update: After taking a generic brand for several months, my dietician said my Omega-3 levels were lower than she would expect/like to see, especially given that I’ve been taking supplements. Brand does matter, apparently. She recommended Ortho Molecular Product’s Orthomega.
–Ask your doctor what he/she recommends for you!
