Introduction
I’ve been thinking for a while of writing a devotional on waiting. Waiting is a theme in the infertility world; even more so the dreaded two-week wait (tww) — the amount of time you have to wait to find out if you’ve conceived or not — with the blessing and curse being that there’s nothing you can do during those long two weeks. In reality, though, we’re all waiting for something. We’re waiting for test results. We’re waiting for a child to come home. We’re waiting for an important phone call. We’re waiting for a vacation.
We’re all waiting.
So while I originally set out to make this a devotional about waiting during the TWW of infertility, in reality it’s a “Two Weeks of Waiting” devotional for everyone in waiting.
Whenever I think about waiting, the parable of the ten minas from Luke 19 (or the parable of the talents, from Matthew 25) comes to mind. Remember this parable? A man gave his servants each a mina (about 3 months wages) and then went away. He didn’t say when he’d be back. And so his servants waited for him to come home.
Each of them did something different while they waited. The first earned ten more minas; the second earned five; and the third — well, the third only hid the mina. The parable ends this way: The first two were rewarded, while the third had even his one mina taken from him. The third servant’s problem was that he didn’t do anything while he waited.
I hope this TWW devotional challenges you to consider what you are doing in the waiting, and, even more importantly, reminds you of what you’re really waiting for.
