Psalms for Those Suffering: Free Printable Prayers

[Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. You can read my full disclosure here.]

I have to confess that I’ve never really been a big fan of the book of Psalms. I like action; not poetry. This might be going out on a limb here, but I’d say I’d even take reading through Leviticus’ ultra-specific laws and rules over Psalms’ flowery poetry.

Until I go through hard times, that is. Reading through the book of Psalms again while going through infertility has given me a newfound respect and love for the Psalms. Yes, many of the Psalms are David’s prayers when he is being persecuted and literally fears for his life, but at the same time, many of his words and prayers apply to all kinds of suffering.

My favorite thing about the Psalms is the brutal honesty. The Psalms are a good reminder that men and women “after God’s own heart” can cry out to, plead with, and yell at God. Many of the prayers remind me of how Hannah poured out her soul to the Lord in her anguish (read more on that here). When you don’t know what to pray, just pray the Psalms.

My study Bible puts it this way: “When reading David’s psalms, with all their emotional peaks and valleys, it may even seem that he wrote them as a form of spiritual therapy, a way of talking himself into faith when his spirit and emotions were wavering.”

That being said, I used my favorite psalms to create these 10 downloadable prayer bookmarks. These Psalms are intended to be used as prayers during times of suffering or hardship. Some of these prayers simply cry out to God for help, some offer comfort, some ask for direction, and some, I hope, will help you “talk yourself into faith when your spirit and emotions are wavering.”
