Psalm 46:1-3

1 God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Psalm 46:1-3, NIV

Devotion

Seems like “there’s always something”…isn’t there?

I’ve felt this way with my health over the last few years. After having a spot of melanoma skin cancer removed, it seemed like every time I went into the dermatologist thereafter, there was “always something.” A suspicious mole, something that concerned me or the doctor, lymph nodes that seemed a little bigger than “normal.” Nothing could ever quite go as smoothly as I hoped. There’s always something.

Seems that way at work sometimes too. Things finally seem to be working out the way I want…finally seem to be going my way…and then I get an angry email from a parent or I find out I’ll be teaching something different next year or I’m told a brand new student is coming in the middle of the year. There’s always something.

There always is something, isn’t there? Something that’s nagging at the back of your mind; something to worry about; something you wish didn’t bother you.

One of the vocabulary words I taught to my students this week was the word “refuge.” As I was teaching it, the first thing that came to my mind was Psalm 46:1.

God is our refuge and our strength.

When there’s always something, the remedy is not to get rid of the “something.” There will always be something to be concerned about, something we could always worry about if we wanted to.

Instead, the remedy is to seek refuge in the only place where true refuge can be found: In Christ.

Though we have one more health concern, we will trust God.

Though we have one more thing come up at work, we will seek rest in God.

Though the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, we will not fear.

Action Steps

What is your “something” that causes you worry? Realize that even when that something goes away, there will be another something to take its place. Instead, seek refuge in Christ. Memorize Psalm 46:1-3 and think of it when you’re faced with another something.
